The O'Neill Library Information Centre plays a key role involving students in the active process of learning using a variety of print and non-print resources.  Computer software resources and Internet access are of special interest to many of the users.  Students must present their school photo ID to borrow books.  The Resource Centre also provides information on documenting essays and report resources in the APA and MLA Styles.

Literacy is a Life Long Skill

  • Read at home to acquire the critical thinking skills crucial for success.
  • Regularly visit the local public library.
  • Get to know the teacher-librarian and school library programme.
  • Volunteer as a Library Helper
  • Become a White Pine Reader
  • Make use of the newspapers and other periodicals in the Library.
  • Use the Inquiry and Research Process effectively.

White Pine Reading Programme

O'Neill is a proud participant in the White Pine Reading Programme.  Ten recent Canadian fiction titles, written for the young adult audience, are selected by Teacher-Librarians.  Students are to read a minimum of five of these books, in order to participate in the provincial vote, for their favourite, and the end of year celebration.

Goals of the White Pine Programme

  • To promote recreational reading.
  • To broaden awareness of Canadian fiction and authors.
  • To provide opportunities for book discussions outside of class.

Students at O'Neill are encouraged to become information literate.

The Ministry of Education defines information literacy as "the ability to acquire, critically evaluate, select, use, create and communicate information in ways which lead to knowledge and wisdom."
